Dramatic Mountain Rescue Edit – THE DANGLER!!!!!

During the first week of April last season, I met up with fellow gapers Travis McAlpine, Ryan Halverson, and Scott Henderson for a Gaper Fools Day schuss on Cody Peak, just outside the south boundary gates of Jackson Hole Resort. The day was in and out clouds – flashes of hot sun punctuated by blasts of cold wind. The snow was equally variable but coverage everywhere was all-time.

Our sweater and leisure-suit attired crew aimed to schuss a celebratory Gaper lap in the legendary Central Couloir – always steep and burly, though incredibly filled in at the end of 2010/’11 resort season. However, as we ascended the boot pack with a clear view across to Central, we saw a dude rolling solo in there above the steep middle pinch. After a few moments of watching, it was clear that he was having a tough go of it. What happened from there is nothing short of a full-on Jackson Hole epic. After watching The Dangler’s board fly into Central, our crew opted to hit up the south/sunny side of Cody. While enjoying some early spring shred, we even met up with none other than Lionel Ritchie! Crooning soulfully, he invited us to join him for a lap in the pinchy and rocky Three Times a Lady.
