Top Three reasons to Avoid Car Camping in the Sticks of Canada

[ 0 ] April 26, 2012 |

After leaving the posh resort environment of Whistler, B.C. we were psyched to head for the Canadian Rockies. Revelstoke, Rogers Pass, and Golden were on the hit list. Looking to save some coin after spending a long weekend in Whistler we decided to check into some of the car camping options off the Trans-Canada Highway as we made our way east. What we found led us to the nearest cheap motel as quickly as possible.

Here are the top 3 reasons not to randomly car camp in the sticks of Canada.

1-This Guy. As we pulled off the highway near Hope, BC to explore possible roadside campsites on a logging road, we found this guy lurking nearby. Not sure if I want him tapping on our tent in the morning to give us breakfast out of whatever he had stashed in that fancy shopping cart.

2-Leather Face. Although he did give us a friendly wave as we drove by, the only other person we saw using one of the campsites was sitting around his campfire with a chainsaw in hand, and a few too many empty beer cans in the dirt.

3-FUBAR. We pulled up to one site at the end of the road that looked like it was going to be adequate. It was along a river, and had a nice fire ring in an open area within some mossy trees. As we got closer to inspect it we found tons of trash, a myriad of empty beer cans, random car parts, and most discouragingly, bullet holes in the ‘no refuse’signs. We were pretty sure FUBAR and crew were here not too long ago, and would probably be back.

In case you have not yet had the pleasure of watching FUBAR, here is what a FUBAR camping experience is like.

I’m sure with proper planning, or just better luck it’s possible to find some good car camping along the Trans Canada Highway, at least a bit later in the spring after more logging roads dry out. If you find it, be sure to let us know for next time!
