Inferno of Pain

[ 0 ] March 6, 2013 |

For the past thirteen winters the Aspen Ski Patrol has staged The Inferno at Aspen Highlands. It is a quick and brutal redline grind to the the top of Highland Bowl from Loge Peak Lift, before shredding to the finish at the base of Deep Temerity lift.

If you aren’t familiar with Highland Bowl, it is high quality sustained terrain that can be accessed above the uppermost lift by taking a hike up a sweet alpine ridge. The hike starts at 11,675 feet, and tops out at 12,392 feet. It takes the average person about 50 minutes just to hike to the top of the bowl. From the top of the bowl, the run to the base of the Loge Peak lift is is a leg-burning 2,500′.

John Gaston, the 2013 U.S Ski Mountaineering Champion, won the race in a crushing 24:59 – a new course record. He was followed by Brian Johnston who in 28:22. Lyndsay Meyer was the first female to the finish in 31:42. Complete results can be found by clicking here.
