The Beautiful Women of Berthoud Pass

Between the icy Front Range Colorado hamlets of Empire & Winter Park, CO lies the high country mecca of utopic easy up backcountry shred terrain referred to by the layperson as Berthoud Pass.

For the past two hundred or so years, a rural legend has grown and persisted…It has been whispered that fleeting shapes of scantily clad nymphs have been seen bounding between the frozen trees, sometimes materializing in a whisp to give the delirious backcountry schusser a PG-13 or even ‘soft R’ flash of friendliness – before disappearing just as quickly into the next flash of spindrift.

After questions and rumors persisted throughout generations, it has finally been confirmed – due in large part to research made possible by the Obama Administration’s American Investment & Recovery Act of 2009 – that these aforementioned mythic creatures are actually a rare new species: BWPP. For the idiotically maleducated, this stands for The Beautiful Women of Berthoud Pass.

Friends of Berthoud Pass is dedicated to promoting sustainable and safe backcountry shred access in this highly trafficked quadrant of Colorado. In addition to adhering to sustainable usage protocols and dialed avalanche safety practices, it is imperative that Berthoud Pass enthusiasts co-habitat effectively & peacefully with the BWBP.

After years of serving the good of the snow community, Friends of Berthoud Pass has won the uncommon and exhilarating permission to photograph the BWPP during unusual moments of rapturous beauty. Winter’s on in the Tetons (finally!) and this video by KGB Productions does a great job of showing how good it was inbounds last week at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The action picks up quite a bit during the last minute or two with action in the Crags and Corbets. Good fun!

CO Snowboarder Saved by Airbag Pack

Meesh Hytner, a Summit Cty, CO-based snowboarder, dropped into an edgy line not far from Keystone/A-basin, set off a huge avalanche, and was very thankfully unburied & unscathed – most likely because she was able to pull the ripcord on her Backcountry Access Float 30 airbag pack.

In her own words on Facebook:

The video is out. I don’t care why anyone thinks it was stupid to be out there or anything negative that’s already been posted. I wanted this to be released so that viewers would know that the 2012 backcountry is a shitty place to be. I’ve always been the kind of person who has to touch the stove and get burned before I’d believe it was hot. I just don’t want anyone else to do it. So if you want to throw a negative comment my way, save it because I’ve heard them all at this point. Talk is cheap. All I care about is keeping my snowboarding family safe.

With a slow start to the 2012 season here in Jackson, it’s been hard to find the motivation to get out and ski let alone find anything worthy to film. But usually something is always better than nothing so here’s a quick edit of a few days playing on the pass and around town.
